Submarine cables are critical infrastructure connecting nations, with South Korea serving as a hub linking the United States and Asia. However, cable damage caused by human activities such as fishing, dredging, and anchor drops has led to frequent cable cuts, resulting in communication outages and significant economic losses. To address this, Suncom has developed and supplied Korea’s first submarine cable protection system, capable of detecting and preventing such incidents in advance.

KT International Submarine Cable Center’s dedicated submarine cable monitoring system provides real-time surveillance of fishing activities, vessel traffic, and underwater operations in the vicinity of submarine cables. Since the system’s implementation, submarine cable cut incidents—previously causing annual losses of up to 30 billion KRW—have been reduced to zero.
