Since 2014, Suncom has been leading Korea’s first development of illegal fishing surveillance systems for distant-water vessels. Each year, we enhance our system capabilities, pioneering AI-based illegal fishing detection technologies
“IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing accounts for 15% of global catch. Since the 1997 UN FAO agreement, IUU fishing has been internationally recognized as a critical issue for securing stable food resources. As a result, the adoption of AI surveillance technologies is being mandated.”

To secure national fishing rights, countries must comply with monitoring mandates from international organizations such as the UN FAO and Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs). All fishing activities must be managed according to international regulations, requiring the digital identification of vessel location, abnormal behavior, and emergency situations.
Utilizes shipboard location transmission devices (Inmarsat, Iridium) and satellite AIS (Automatic Identification System) to track real-time fishing positions of distant-water vessels. Converts vessel entry into EEZs (Exclusive Economic Zones) or restricted fishing zones into digital data. Enables intuitive surveillance of illegal fishing using electronic chart-based systems.
Applied to all Korean-flagged distant-water vessels and in operation at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ Fisheries Monitoring Center since 2014
Suncom has developed and supplied a smart, tablet PC-based mobile electronic reporting system for fishing activities. This system allows for electronic entry and real-time satellite reporting of fishing information, including port entries and departures, to both monitoring centers and international organizations.
Supports fishing activity reports, distress signals, port entry/exit logs, set haul records, catch reports, and SMS messaging functions
Deployed on all Korean-flagged distant-water vessels including longliners, bottom longliners, purse seiners, squid jiggers, trawlers, and stow net vessels.
A centralized system that manages all data related to distant-water fishing vessels. It enables integrated data sharing between relevant institutions and allows fishing companies to manage their own fleets via web-based programs that collect, analyze, and share information.
Tracks with the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), manages fishing licenses, and provides fishing statistics.
Utilized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Fisheries Monitoring Center, National Institute of Fisheries Science, National Fishery Products Quality Management Service, distant-water fishing companies, and associations for administrative monitoring coordination.
